Modem Driver Summary:
The BluetoothTM modem installed by XP SP2 is correct. (No Ericsson drivers needed for GPRS Internet access via Bluetooth.) The additional install file that Ericsson provides does get the R520 IR Modem installed and working. While the R520 Cable Modem just installs as expected, and works with any compatible USB data cable.
Phone Software Summary:
The Ericsson Communication Suit has a problem with the Mobile Phone Monitor not wanting to detect the Ericsson phone. Since all the other phone programs depend on this to communicate with the phone, the Communication Suit will not be usable until the Mobile Phone Monitor is working correctly. (Eventually the phone will be detected, then everything will work fine.)
Note: The PC Suite software-- that Sony Ericsson provided for newer model phones-- is not compatible with the R520, because the Sync Station utility is unable to access the older Ericsson phone models.
The Bluetooth support provided by Windows XP SP2 will install the R520 as a "Standard Modem over Bluetooth link". Do not try to change this to the "Ericsson R520 Bluetooth(TM) Modem", as that driver will not work with Windows XP SP2.
However, the "Standard Modem" that Windows XP installs when using the IR port is not correct. So per the instructions on the previous page, the Sony Ericsson Modem Script R520 must be downloaded, then used to install the "Ericsson R520 IR Modem".
Also per the instructions on the previous page, it is the Sony Ericsson Communication Suite which installs the Ericsson modem drivers in the first place. And if those drivers are all I want, then I still prefer the previous R520 CD update version-- which Sony Ericsson no longer provides-- as that permitted installing just the Ericsson modem drivers.
I have often seen the Ericsson Communication Suit software hang at the very end of the Install process. If this happens, then the Uninstall for this software will not be usable.
Windows 2000 or Windows XP must be configured to use any unsigned device drivers without asking for approval to do so. Otherwise the Communications Suit installer will hang at the very end of the Install process.
I picked up a 3rd party USB Data Cable for Sony Ericsson phones, because that cable also provides a small switch to enable or disable charging the phone battery from the computer USB port. A driver from the included CD was necessary for that USB Data Cable to be properly recognized and installed within Windows XP. Then except for the annoyance that none of the Ericsson R520 modem drivers are signed, the "Ericsson R520 Cable Modem" is the one R520 driver that did install and work as expected.
This section is still being written, and will be uploaded shortly.
