This page describes a previous version of the R520 driver and software update, which is no longer available at the Sony Ericsson site. See the current version of this Webpage, for information about the software and drivers the Sony Ericsson site now provides.

Ericsson 520 Drivers and Software Update

TIP: To install only the Mobile Phone Modem drivers onto a Windows PC, run the install program for the Ericsson Communications Suit Software, and un-check all of the optional components that lists.

The Ericsson R520 is a really nice GSM/GPRS cellular phone. When this product is used as a modem, it can connect to a computer by either a high-speed Infrared port (IrDA 1.1) or BluetoothTM. The only drawback of using the Infrared port instead of BluetoothTM, is that picking up the phone to answer an incoming voice call usually results in loosing the IrDA connection, thus dropping the connection to the Internet.

However, when using GPRS data, an upgrade to the Ericsson modem driver was required to get the same performance from the IrDa port as was obtained using BluetoothTM. Doing this upgrade was not as obvious as it should have been, so below are my notes on doing so:

Added Notes: (Sept. 2005)

If you have the R5A version of the original CD, and still wish to use this version of the drivers and software update-- which Sony-Ericsson no longer provides-- then you will need to obtain the following file from DriverGuide.com :

EricssonCommunicationsSuite_R520_Patch_from_R5A01_to_R6A02.exe (6.90MB).

The below steps, for how this update used to be obtained from Sony-Ericsson, no longer work. However, the information at the end of those download instructions should help to determine if you can use the above R5A update file.

R5A01 to R6A02 Update notes:

The file size information at the top of the page is wrong, but the information provided further down under Install instructions is correct.

Do read the instructions on the page for this update, as that contains important information about not deleting the CDO.DLL file.

I have often seen the Ericsson Communication Suit software hang at the very end of the Install process. If this happens, then the Uninstall for this software will not be usable.

If you have not set Windows 2000 or XP to use any un-signed drivers without asking for approval, then the Communications Suit installer will hang at the very end of the Install process.
