Install the Ericsson R520 Drivers and Software
Also for models: T68, T65, T62, and T39 (a mini R520)

NOTE: For GPRS access to the Internet via BluetoothTM, the drivers and software for the computer's BluetoothTM adapter should be all that is required.

TIP: To load the Ericsson IR modem drivers onto a Windows PC, run the install program for the Ericsson Communications Suit Software. Then simply enable the IrDA port on both devices, and let PnP install the correct Windows modem driver. (If this instead installs a Standard Modem, see below.)

Obtaining the needed files and instructions

To locate the needed drivers & software update:
  1. The Sony Ericsson sites have changed yet again, so the software and drivers for the R520m/R520mc phone can now be found at:
    http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=gb&lc=en&ver=4000&template=ps1&zone=ps&lm=ps1&pid=9466
  2. Under the Software and setup section heading, select the link for Software downloads.
  3. Windows 2000/XP users who will be using an IR port should select the Sony Ericsson Modem Script R520 link under the Drivers and scripts section heading. The link to Download the IR modem install file is then found near the top of that Webpage.
  4. Repeating steps 1 & 2 if necessary, all Windows users now need to select the Sony Ericsson Communication Suite 1.5.9 link under the Synchronization section heading. All of the installation instructions and notes are provided on that webpage. And the link to Download the install file is found near the top of the page.

Communication Suite Install instructions (an edited version)

  1. Download the installation package to your computer (remember where you save the downloaded installation file).
  2. Close (Exit) any other programs that are running.
  3. On a Windows 2000 or XP system, set the operating system to ignore a missing driver signature, and to install that driver anyway-- as you might not be shown a "driver not signed" window, that would permit selecting the "use anyway" button.
    • It is a good idea to record what the driver signatures setting was, to permit setting it back to what it was, once this installation is completed.
  4. Uninstall older versions of the Ericsson Communication Suite software.
    • If the un-installer asks, select to uninstall all programs.
    • Once the uninstall has finished, a full Windows shutdown is a better idea than just restarting Windows. (Shutdown then power back on always works as intended when uninstalling or installing drivers and/or system files.)
    • Consider also going into Control Panel and Modems to manually select then Remove any Ericsson cellular modem. As a modem re-install after the software update will ensure the most up-to-date drivers are used.
  5. Double click on the downloaded installation package file.
  6. Follow the provided installation instructions.
    • If you do not wish to install the XTNDConnect PC software, then proceed until you can select the option to purchase the full version. The installer will then finish the drivers and utilities install, while opening a Web-browser to try and load the Webpage where XTNDConnect could be purchased.
    • The Ericsson only version of the XTNDConnect PC software requires that Microsoft Outlook (not Outlook Express) be already installed on the computer.
  7. Restart your computer if needed.

Notes

To change the Driver Signing settings in Windows XP: right click on My Computer and select Properties; in the window that opens, select the Hardware tab; then select the Driver Signing button.

"Installation of modems will give warning on WinXP and Win2000. Ignore the warning, the modem drivers are fully tested. Digital signatures for these modems are not possible to get as of today."

The Uninstall for XTNDConnect PC is separate from the Uninstall for the rest of the Sony Ericsson Communication Suit; while uninstalling both will still leave the Ericsson modem drivers installed as available Windows device drivers.

A Standard Modem was installed via the IR port

"To use the IR modem on windows XP/2000, you have to update the standard modem installed by default [to] instead install the correct IR modem.

"The modem that gets installed if placing the phone at the IR eye is a standard IR modem (this is a known Microsoft problem). To be able to use your phone as a modem please try the solution below:

  1. Open 'Phone and Modem Options' in the Control Panel.
  2. Check on what COM port the standard IR modem has been connected to (this is the COM port that the phone's IR modem should be connected to).
  3. Mark the Standard IR modem.
  4. Click 'Properties', Click 'Driver', and 'Update Driver'.
  5. Choose 'Install from a specific location', Click Next.
  6. Choose 'Don't search I will choose driver to install'. Click 'Have Disk'.
  7. Point towards the phone's IR modem script (the downloaded zip file).
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click continue anyway when the installation warning is displayed. The modem drivers are fully tested. Digital signatures for these modems are not available at present.
