GIMP comes by default without the ability to load and save GIF or compressed TIFF images. And the plug-ins to support these file formats cannot legally be used, except by those with a license from Unisys to use the LZW compression algorithm; or those living in a country where the LZW patent does not apply. For the rest of us, if some other program is used just to convert the GIF or TIFF images to/from the PNG format, then the advanced capabilities of GIMP can still be used to work on those images.
